How to Judge the Strength of a Planet in Kundali
Strength of a Planet: According to Vedic astrology, planets operate like guiding forces that influence different areas of our lives. However, not every planet has the same power in each individual kundali. A strong planet will deliver good experiences, success, happiness, and stability while a weak planet will deliver challenges, struggle, and delay. This is why determining the strength of the planets positioned in the kundali is one of the first essential components of reading a horoscope.
So how do astrologers determine if a planet is strong or weak? Let’s simplify it.
Analyzing the Strength of a Planet
Exaltation and Debilitation – A planet can be exalted, or elevated, in its position which will allow the planet degree of power to function to a high degree and appear to give good results. A planet which is debilitated, or reduced in its influence, will not be able to work with dignity based upon the house that is occupied in reference to the experience or affect that the astrology is indicative.
Own Sign and Friendly Sign – A planet that is placed, or located in its own sign is strong inherently. In a friendly or supportive sign, the planet does give some helpful results; however, when it is placed (or situated) in an enemy position, the degree of strength diminishes.
House Placement – Planets that are placed or situated in Kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) or in Trikona houses (1, 5, 9) remain most always strong. When a planet is located in a Dusthana house (6, 8, 12) the power of the planet is compromised, or reduced, during the duration of its transference in that particular house positional placement unless other cosmological factors ameliorate it.
Combustion – A planet combusts (disappears) when it comes too near to the Sun. Such planets lose their inherent strength and are not capable of delivering their complete significance.
Retrograde Motion – Retrograde planets tend to act in complicated ways. At times they become exceedingly strong, but deliver results in unique or delayed manners. Their influence, magnitude, and direction are dependent on the signs, house, and aspects.
Aspects and Conjunctions – If a planet receives an aspect from a benefic like Jupiter, the planet increases in strength, and the opposite takes place if it receives an aspect from a malefic. The influence of a conjunction is also very influential in determining strength.
Navamsa Chart (D9) – The Navamsa chart is like a secondary examination of the planetary influences. It is important for the assessment from the D1 chart to correspond with the Navamsa chart. From the D1, planets may appear to be strong yet need to be strong in the Navamsa in order to produce lasting good results.
